Gloc-9 is a name almost all Filipinos already know. His rap songs have become anthems to many of us, not just because of their great musicality, but most importantly because of the striking message they intend to bring. But beyond the words of his songs we mostly memorize, let’s familiarize ourselves more with the personal life of this amazing rapper.
1. Gloc-9’s real name is Aristotle Pollisco. He was born on October 18, 1977 in Binangonan, Rizal.In 1996, he began to make a name for himself in the local underground hip hop scene, as a member of the hip hop group, Death Threat.
2. How did he get his rapper name? The then known leader of Death Threat, told him to have a name in order to be part of their group and become a rapper. Many names were suggested to him, but one name given which was “Glock-9”, rang a bell to him so he stuck with it. He thought removing the letter ‘k’ would make the name much cooler.
3. Gloc-9 entered the mainstream music scene through the discovery of Star Music’s Christian Martinez. He then was asked to compose and sing songs for some Star Cinema movies such as “Jologs” and “Trip.”
4. In 2002, Gloc-9 joined the song-writing competition, Himig Handog Love Songs. His song “Bakit?”, co-written with Mike Villlegas, was interpreted by himself and Cookie Chua.
5. Since these early years in his career, Gloc-9 blossomed into a great rapper. He has written countless hit songs that always portray beautiful message. Some of his hit songs are “Simpleng Tao”, “Sumayaw Ka”, “Torpedo”, “Upuan”, at “Sirena”. Much of his songs are collaborated with other artists.
6. Even the late Master Rapper, Francis M, had a great deal of respect and adoration for Gloc-9. The two collaborated a couple of times. One work you’re surely familiar with is their hit song with Parokya ni Edgar, “Bagsakan”. Francis M described Gloc-9 as “a blacksmith of words and letters, and a true Filipino poet”.
7. In his almost two decades in creating hip hop music, Gloc-9 has been awarded various times to recognize his talent. The most recent awards he received were the Globe Tatt Awards in 2012 as Indie Rocker, and Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Urban Video in the Myx Music Awards 2012.
