7 Things to Know About Sponge Cola

If you are a huge fan of OPM, then there is no reason for you not to know about the prominent rock band, Spongecola. The band has been active in the Filipino music scene since 2004. Boost up your knowledge about this band through this list.

1. The formation of the band took process from 1998 to 2002. In 1998, Yael Yuzon and Gosh Dilay invited their co-members in Ateneo de Manila High School’s Teatro Bagunta to form a band. After some line-up changes in the band members, they were officially launched in the summer of 2003 with Yael on lead vocals and guitars, Gosh on bass guitar and back-up vocals, Armo Armovit on lead guitar, and Chris Cantada on drums.

2. The band was initially named Sponge, after the famous book by R.S. Surtees, “Mr. Sponge Sporting Tour”. However, they added the term “Cola” when they found out that a band in Detroit already had the same name.

3. In 2008, one of the peak years of Sponge Cola’s career, drummer Chris Cantada left the band because of health reasons. He was later on replaced by Tmac Cruz.

4. Throughout the years, the band had released five albums and three EPs. Their latest album, “Ultrablessed”, was released on January 31, 2014. On the same day, their first DVD concert called “Maximum Capacity” was also launched.

5. Sponge Cola has also released countless hits. Some of these are “Jeepney”, “Gemini”, “Bitiw”, “Tuliro”, “Di na mababawi”, “Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay”, and “Move On” featuring teen star Jane Oineza.

6. Recently, Sponge Cola headline Google PH’s “Google Mo Lang Campaign”, aiming to promote Google Search in the country.

7. For their stellar work and music, the band has been recognized many times by various award-giving bodies such as MYX Music Awards, OPM Songhits Awards, and Guillermo Mendoza Awards. Some of the awards they received recently are Best Rock Group and Best Rock Album for “Ultrablessed” in the 2014 Star Awards for Music.
