From ASOP to WMA: Mela considers ‘Kumapit Ka Lang’ as a key to rising prominence
Mela, whose real name is Carmela Ravanilla, is a new face in the music industry. Thanks to her victorious stint in the A Song of Praise (ASOP) Music Festival Year 5, her musical chops that she only showcased in various singing contests before, the “PLDT Singing Idol” being the biggest, is now known to a much wider audience. During the show’s grand finals night, she interpreted the entry “Kumapit Ka Lang,” which eventually won the Song of the Year award.
Almost a month after the music revelry, she received yet another great news — her nomination in the 2nd Wish 107.5 Music Awards (WMA) under the Wish Promising Artist category.
“Nagulat po ako sa nomination, hindi ko inakala. ‘Yung mga kasama ko, sobrang bigatin, kaya nakakataba ng puso,” she told Wish when she hopped on the Wish 107.5 Bus last December 8.
(“I was stoked to hear about the nomination, I really wasn’t expecting it. My co-nominees are all great, so it’s very heartwarming.”)
She further added that she considers “Kumapit Ka Lang” as a significant factor in earning the WMA nod, “Siguro ‘yung Kumapit Ka Lang na song ‘yung way para makamit ko ‘to.”
(“Maybe it was the song ‘Kumapit Ka Lang’ that helped me achieve this recognition.”)
She first performed the award-winning praise song on the Wish 107.5 Bus on October 24. On the same Roadshow guesting, she also collaborated with fellow Wish Promising Artist nominee Daniel Ombao for a cover of Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One.”

Other artists vying in the category include indie folk duo Ben and Ben, singer/songwriter/cellist Coeli San Luis, Tawag ng Tanghalan’s Eumee Capile, Noven Belleza and Sam Mangubat, Jap-Pinoy Star Quest champion Mayumi, Europop 2015 grand winner Ryan Tamondong, and loop artist Zsaris.
Online voting for the 2nd WMA is open until January 16, 2017, 12 noon.
